I have had an offer to buy The Former Jarrow Civic Hall accepted by the local authority. The purchase was completed on Friday 15th April 2011.
The building is directly across the road from my existing business JK Clothing Ltd.
The news was broken by the South Shields Gazette on Monday 18th April.
It is our intention to bring the ballroom back to its original condition and open it for use for functions such as weddings, live music, dancing, private functions and to consider any other function that people want to see it used for (subject to planning permission).
The first stage of the development will be to create an Italian Restaurant to the ground floor. Once this is up and running we will then restore the first floor ballroom and function room to their former glory.
The ballroom ceiling has been restored and a photo of it can be seen in the gallery section. This was done early in the restoration as it was felt it would be better to get this done first as the work would create a lot of dust and debris and should be done before the restaurant was opened. No other work has been done to the first floor.
Instead of having a grand opening night we are going to have a week long celebration of the reopening of the Jarrow Civic Hall where we will be able to showcase all that the Civic has to offer.
We are aiming to have the first floor ballroom and function rooms open by August 2012 and are currently taking bookings for wedding receptions. If there is sufficient demand we will obtain the necessary licence and arrange for wedding ceremonies to be carried out in the function rooms.
The restaurant opened on the 12th December 2011. The restaurant has been named 'Sir Charlie's' after Sir Charles Mark Palmer the famous ship builder who instigated the building of Jarrow Civic Hall back in 1863.
The restaurant has been well recieved by the people of Jarrow and surrounding areas. Local people have fond memories of the Civic Hall from its heyday and would have been very disapointed to see it demolished.
The comments we have had from those who have used the restaurant has been very positive as can be seen by the testimonials in the relevent section of the website.

Also on Tuesday 14th February we had an inspection by the Environmental Health Department of the local authority who awarded the restaurant the maximum 5 stars.
We have posted a video on youtube showing how the restaurant was created from a derelict area of the building. This can be viewed from the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGr1mL2IhSQ&feature=relmfu .
Any suggestions as to the use of the ballroom could be emailed to;
We have added videos to youtube following the restoration. If you want to view these then here is the link http://www.youtube.com/user/JarrowCivicHall?ob=0&feature=results_main
John Knowles (director and owner of Jarrow Civic Hall)
We have had discussions with entertainment companies who can provide themed party nights e.g. West end musicals, pantomine, tribute artists etc. These functions would be carried out in the first floor ballroom. There is a room alongside the ballroom which we are calling the ballroom lounge. We intend to use this room as an additional function room to be used either independently or in conjunction with the ballroom. There is a large kitchen adjacent to this room. A fully equipped gym has been opened on the ground floor.
The room would be made available to the sequence dancers, ballroom and tea dancers that used to use the hall prior to its closure.
The restaurant on the ground floor, named Sir Charlie's after the shipbuilder who instigated the building of The Jarrow Civic Hall can also be used for private functions, children's parties, christenings etc. There is also a small room off the restaurant which we are calling the executive dinning room. This room can cater for up to 18 people and can be used for corporate lunches and social enterprise functions such as craft and computer classes, breakfast clubs etc.
